Psychological Blocks

Shadow work spread to identify and release inner obstacles

Purpose This spread embodies The Devil archetype (Major Arcana XV)—the chained figures who could free themselves but don't, representing self-imposed limitations and unconscious bondage. Combined with Jungian shadow psychology, this spread traces the anatomy of psychological blocks: from surface manifestation (CURRENT_BLOCK) through root causation (ORIGIN), to the fear maintaining the pattern (FEAR), and ultimately to liberation (FREEDOM). The 6-card layout moves from darkness to light, from the chains of The Devil to the liberation of The Star that follows in the Major Arcana sequence.

When to use it When you feel stuck in patterns you can't break, when the same obstacles keep appearing despite efforts to change, or when you sense self-sabotage operating beneath conscious awareness. Ideal for therapy-adjacent reflection, understanding why you resist what you want, or preparing for psychological work. Use when ready to confront uncomfortable truths about self-limitation.

When to avoid it Avoid during acute mental health crises—this spread can surface painful material requiring professional support. Not suitable when seeking external solutions to internal problems, or when unable to engage in honest self-reflection. Skip if currently avoiding therapy that may be needed; tarot complements but doesn't replace professional psychological help.

How to read it Start with CURRENT_BLOCK to name the obstacle, then trace backward to ORIGIN for root causation—often childhood or formative experiences. IMPACT reveals how the block manifests in daily life. FEAR exposes the unconscious motivation maintaining the block (fear of success, abandonment, inadequacy, etc.). RELEASE shows the liberation strategy, and FREEDOM depicts life without this limitation. The Devil reversed often appears in RELEASE positions; The Star in FREEDOM positions suggests hope.

How the positions relate CURRENT_BLOCK and ORIGIN reveal the causal chain—how past events created present limitations

FEAR is the hidden engine—compare with RELEASE to see what must be confronted for liberation

IMPACT and FREEDOM show the contrast between life with and without the block—motivation for change
