Angular relationships between planets and cards

Introduction to Astrological Aspects

Aspects are the angular relationships between planets in astrology and between cards in tarot spreads. They describe how different energies interact, combine, or challenge each other.

What Are Aspects?

In astrology, aspects are measured in degrees around the 360° circle of the zodiac:

  • When two planets are separated by specific angles, they form an aspect
  • Each aspect creates a unique type of interaction between the planetary energies
  • These interactions can be harmonious, challenging, or neutral

In tarot, we can recognize similar patterns when cards appear together in readings.

The Five Major Aspects

1. Conjunction (0°)

  • Meaning: Fusion, unity, blending of energies
  • Nature: Neutral to intense (depends on planets/cards involved)
  • Symbol: ☌

2. Sextile (60°)

  • Meaning: Opportunity, easy flow, support
  • Nature: Harmonious, gentle
  • Symbol: ⚹

3. Square (90°)

  • Meaning: Tension, challenge, growth through conflict
  • Nature: Dynamic, difficult
  • Symbol: □

4. Trine (120°)

  • Meaning: Harmony, natural talent, ease
  • Nature: Very harmonious, flowing
  • Symbol: △

5. Opposition (180°)

  • Meaning: Polarity, balance, awareness through contrast
  • Nature: Challenging but balancing
  • Symbol: ☍

Aspects in the Zodiac Wheel

The 360° zodiac circle divided by aspects:

  • 360° ÷ 1 = 360° (full circle, return to start)
  • 360° ÷ 2 = 180° (opposition)
  • 360° ÷ 3 = 120° (trine)
  • 360° ÷ 4 = 90° (square)
  • 360° ÷ 6 = 60° (sextile)

These divisions create geometric patterns in the chart, which we can also see in tarot spreads.

Orbs: Allowing Some Flexibility

Aspects don't need to be exact. Astrologers use orbs (allowable deviations):

  • Conjunction, Opposition, Square, Trine: typically ±8-10° orb
  • Sextile: typically ±4-6° orb

This means a square doesn't have to be exactly 90°—88° or 92° still counts.

Why Aspects Matter in Tarot

Understanding aspects helps you:

  1. Recognize patterns in card combinations
  2. See relationships between positions in a spread
  3. Understand dynamics between different life areas
  4. Create meaningful spreads based on astrological geometry

Elements and Aspects

Aspects often connect signs of compatible or challenging elements:

  • Trine (120°): Usually connects same element (Fire-Fire, Earth-Earth)
  • Sextile (60°): Usually connects compatible elements (Fire-Air, Earth-Water)
  • Square (90°): Usually connects incompatible elements (Fire-Water, Earth-Air)
  • Opposition (180°): Usually connects opposing elements (Fire-Air, Earth-Water)

Practice: Recognizing Aspect Energy

When you see two cards in a reading:

  • Close together or overlapping: Conjunction energy (blending)
  • Supporting each other's message: Sextile/Trine energy (harmony)
  • Creating tension or contradiction: Square energy (challenge)
  • Showing two sides of a situation: Opposition energy (polarity)

Aspects are the grammar of astrological language—they show how different words (planets/cards) relate to form meaningful sentences (interpretations).
