Astrological Correspondences

Introduction

Tarot and astrology are sister systems—two symbolic languages describing the same cosmic energies through different metaphors. Where astrology maps consciousness onto the celestial sphere (planets, zodiac signs, houses), tarot maps it onto archetypal images (cards, suits, spreads). Both systems recognize the same fundamental truth: as above, so below—the patterns governing stars and planets also govern human souls.

The connection between tarot and astrology deepened in the late 19th century through the Golden Dawn's ceremonial magic system, which assigned specific planets and zodiac signs to each Major Arcana card and court card. While not all tarot traditions emphasize astrology (the Marseille deck predates these associations), understanding planetary and zodiacal correspondences adds rich layers of timing, personality, and cosmic resonance to readings.

This lesson explores the astrological DNA woven into tarot's structure, how to read planetary energies through cards, and how to use astrology to deepen interpretive precision.

The Major Arcana: Elements, Planets, and Signs

The Golden Dawn assigned each of the 22 Major Arcana cards a Hebrew letter, and through that letter an element, a planet, or a zodiac sign. The three Mother letters give the three elements, the seven Double letters give the seven classical planets, and the twelve Simple letters give the twelve zodiac signs. Every Major is assigned exactly once—all 22 covered, with no duplicates.

Elemental Cards (3 Mother letters)

0. The Fool = Air (Aleph): Freedom, infinite potential, the breath of life, the leap into the unknown XII. The Hanged Man = Water (Mem): Surrender, reversal, spiritual sacrifice, the still depths XX. Judgement = Fire (Shin): Awakening, resurrection, the purifying call, rebirth

Planetary Cards (7 Double letters)

I. The Magician = Mercury: Communication, intellect, skill, the messenger between worlds II. The High Priestess = Moon: Intuition, mystery, the unconscious, hidden knowledge III. The Empress = Venus: Love, beauty, fertility, creative abundance X. Wheel of Fortune = Jupiter: Expansion, luck, cycles, divine providence XVI. The Tower = Mars: Destruction, sudden upheaval, aggressive breakthrough XIX. The Sun = Sun: Vitality, joy, clarity, radiant success XXI. The World = Saturn: Completion, structure, cosmic order, earned mastery

Zodiac Sign Cards (12 Simple letters)

Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius):

  • IV. The Emperor = Aries (♈): Leadership, authority, pioneering energy
  • VIII. Strength = Leo (♌): Courage, vitality, heart-centered power
  • XIV. Temperance = Sagittarius (♐): Higher vision, alchemical balance, seeking truth

Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn):

  • V. The Hierophant = Taurus (♉): Tradition, stability, grounded wisdom
  • IX. The Hermit = Virgo (♍): Analysis, solitude, discernment
  • XV. The Devil = Capricorn (♑): Ambition, materialism, shadow structures

Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius):

  • VI. The Lovers = Gemini (♊): Duality, choice, communication
  • XI. Justice = Libra (♎): Balance, fairness, equilibrium
  • XVII. The Star = Aquarius (♒): Innovation, hope, humanitarian vision

Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces):

  • VII. The Chariot = Cancer (♋): Emotional control, protective drive, home and family
  • XIII. Death = Scorpio (♏): Transformation, endings, deep regeneration
  • XVIII. The Moon = Pisces (♓): Illusion, deep emotion, the unconscious

Modern note: After the outer planets were discovered, some modern astrologers also associate the Fool with Uranus, the Hanged Man with Neptune, and Death with Pluto. These are 20th-century additions, not part of the original Golden Dawn attributions—which are elemental (Air, Water) and zodiacal (Scorpio) as listed above.

Court Cards: Elemental Astrology

Court Cards combine suit element + rank element + zodiac modality, creating nuanced astrological profiles for the 16 personalities.

Elemental Dignities Recap:

  • Pages = Earth
  • Knights = Fire
  • Queens = Water
  • Kings = Air

Zodiac Modalities (Applied to Courts):

Each court card can be associated with a 10-degree segment of a zodiac sign, blending suit element with zodiacal energy:

Example: King of Wands = Air of Fire + Leo/Aries energy = Intellectual command of creative fire, visionary leadership, strategic passion

Example: Queen of Cups = Water of Water + Cancer/Pisces energy = Emotional depth, nurturing intuition, empathic mastery

Minor Arcana: Decan Associations

In the Golden Dawn system, each of the 36 numbered Minor Arcana cards (Ace–Ten of each suit) corresponds to a 10-degree segment (decan) of the zodiac. This creates hyper-specific astrological timing and personality signatures.

Sample Decan Correspondences:

Two of Wands = Mars in Aries (1st decan): Bold action, pioneering initiative, fiery ambition Five of Cups = Mars in Scorpio (1st decan): Intense grief, emotional crisis, scorpionic loss Seven of Pentacles = Saturn in Taurus (3rd decan): Patient cultivation, slow material growth, disciplined building

Understanding decans allows you to say things like: "The Eight of Swords suggests Jupiter in Gemini—mental restriction through overthinking, communication blocks, scattered thoughts trapping you."

Planetary Timing in Readings

Astrology adds timing precision to tarot readings:

Fast-Moving Planets = Short-Term Events:

  • Mercury: Days to weeks (communication, travel, mental shifts)
  • Venus: Weeks to months (relationships, values, beauty, money)
  • Mars: Weeks to months (action, conflict, energy surges)

Slow-Moving Planets = Long-Term Themes:

  • Jupiter: ~1 year in each sign (expansion, growth, luck cycles)
  • Saturn: ~2.5 years in each sign (lessons, structure, maturation)
  • Outer Planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto): Years to decades (generational shifts, deep transformation)

In Readings: If multiple Mars cards appear (Tower, Five of Wands, Knight of Wands), expect sudden action within weeks. If Saturn/Jupiter cards dominate, anticipate longer developmental arcs.

Elemental Polarities: Active vs. Receptive

Astrology divides signs into masculine/active (Fire, Air) and feminine/receptive (Water, Earth)—a polarity echoed in tarot's suits:

Active/Yang (Fire, Air):

  • Wands (Fire): Initiative, action, extroversion
  • Swords (Air): Intellect, communication, mental assertiveness

Receptive/Yin (Water, Earth):

  • Cups (Water): Emotion, intuition, receptivity
  • Pentacles (Earth): Grounding, nurturing, material receptivity

In Readings: A spread heavy in Fire/Air cards suggests active, outward-focused energy. Heavy Water/Earth suggests receptive, inward-focused energy. Balance between polarities = integration of action and reflection.

Using Astrology to Deepen Tarot Readings

1. Identify Dominant Planetary Energy

Multiple Mercury cards (Magician, Eight of Swords, communication Swords) = Mental focus, messages, intellectual challenges. Check Mercury's current astrological position (retrograde? In what sign?) for additional context.

2. Track Zodiac Seasons

Pulling The Emperor (Aries) during Aries season (March 21–April 19) = Amplified leadership energy, time to initiate projects. Reading cards "out of season" can indicate internal work with that archetype.

3. Synthesize Card + Birth Chart

If querent is a Leo sun and pulls Strength (Leo), the reading speaks directly to their core identity. If they pull The Devil (Capricorn) and have Saturn in Capricorn natally, shadow work around ambition and material attachment is highlighted.

4. Elemental Imbalances

A spread lacking Water cards for a Pisces sun = Disconnection from emotions, need to reconnect with intuition. Excess Fire cards for an earth-heavy chart = Restlessness, need to ground scattered energy.

Practical Example: Reading The Tower Astrologically

The Tower = Mars

Planetary Meaning: Aggressive breakthrough, sudden destruction, warrior energy demolishing false structures.

Timing: Mars-ruled events happen quickly—days to weeks. If Mars is currently in retrograde, The Tower may indicate delayed eruption or internalized rage finally surfacing.

Elemental Signature: Fire (action, transformation, passion). Mars in a Fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) amplifies explosive potential. Mars in Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) = Emotional upheaval channeled through Tower events.

In Spread Context: The Tower alongside The Emperor (Aries/Mars energy) = Double Mars influence—expect intense, rapid, forceful change. The Tower with The Hanged Man (Water) = Sudden breakthrough after long surrender, spiritual crisis catalyst.

A Word of Caution: Systems Vary

Important: Astrological correspondences are not universal. Different tarot systems assign planets/signs differently:

  • Thoth deck (Crowley) follows Golden Dawn closely but adjusts some attributions
  • Marseille deck has no inherent astrological correspondences (though modern readers impose them)
  • Some decks use elemental associations without planetary layers

Always consider the deck's tradition and your own intuitive resonance. Astrological correspondences are a lens, not gospel. Use them when they deepen insight; set them aside when they distract from direct intuitive knowing.

Conclusion

Astrology infuses tarot with cosmic timing, planetary personality, and zodiacal signature. The Magician doesn't just wield conscious will—he channels Mercury's quicksilver adaptability. The Tower isn't just destruction—it's Mars's warrior force breaking through stagnation. Strength isn't just courage—it's Leo's solar-hearted vitality taming primal instinct.

By learning astrological correspondences, you read not just archetypal images but cosmic energies in motion—planets cycling through signs, seasons shifting, celestial forces influencing earthly lives. You can time readings ("This Venus in Libra energy peaks next month"), personalize interpretations ("As a Scorpio, Death/Pluto speaks directly to your core"), and synthesize two ancient wisdom systems into a richer, more textured understanding of human experience.

Tarot is the inner journey; astrology is the outer cosmos. Together, they reveal the truth hermetic magicians have always known: As above, so below. As within, so without. The cards in your hand mirror the stars above your head.
